Exploring Mathematical Ideas with Mime

As mathematicians, our intellectual world is commonly abstract and invisible.  We create a narrative of our intellectual thought through our written words.  This talk will present mime as another, quite different, but surprisingly similar, way of journeying through this logical field.  Further, this talk will discuss how mime can create a roadmap that invites mathematician and non-mathematician alike to travel through a variety of mathematical ideas from the finite to the infinite and the applied to the theoretical.  Marcel Marceau often exclaimed (off-stage, of course) that mime could make the invisible visible.  In this talk, Tim Chartier, who trained with Marceau, will demonstrate performance pieces used to motivate mathematical ideas, teach mime techniques that can foster discussion about mathematical topics, and give pointers on utilizing mime for anyone interested in using the art as a means of inviting students to actively explore mathematics through mime.
