Geometry with Geogebra for Elementary Students: Introduction to the Area Formula for Triangles

This lesson combines introduction to the area formula for triangles with an introduction to the open source program for geometry modeling called Geogebra.  Students will have the opportunity to make decisions on how to partition a figure and apply the area formula, and then students compare results to a computer model they create.  Because there are several ways to complete the task students are able to share their individual work with classmates in a meaningful way.  During class discussions, students are encouraged to make critical observations and corrections of each other’s work, and also to  generate wider questions and conjectures about the mathematical principles involved, as well as the effect of technique and method on results.
