“Build a Number” for Discrete Mathematics Classes

In “Build a Number,” one purpose is for students to develop various counting techniques—combinations, permutations, systematic lists, summation formulas which are all useful in some of the clues.  These are especially useful in discrete math classes, although they also occur in my proof-writing/transition to upper division math class.  I will have participants solve one of the puzzles in groups of four and then talk about the mathematical content of the solutions.  I will then give them a complete set of handouts and talk about the homework and how I use it.
