Building Numbers in a Course for Future Elementary Teachers

This is an activity I use in my number sense course for future elementary teachers. The purpose of this activity is to help students understand prime numbers and see that they are the building blocks of the whole numbers. Most of my students already think they know what prime numbers are, but many of them do not understand that one is not a prime number. This activity helps provide a conceptual understanding of not only the fact that one is not prime, but for the short cuts for finding the greatest common factor and least common multiple of a group of whole numbers. This activity uses snap cubes as a manipulative.
